Territorian Gymnast Wins Artistry Award at Australian Championships

With a backflip here, a flourish there and an almighty smile, Northern Territory gymnast Lara Bedggood has won the Artistry Award for her division at the 2022 Australian Gymnastics Championships.

The 13-year-old gymnast has made the territory proud as the sole representative at the pinnacle national event on the gymnastics calendar, held on Queensland’s Gold Coast from May 11–25.

The athlete, from Territory Gymnastics Academy in Winnellie, competed in level 8 of the women’s artistic gymnastics gymsport, going up against the best in the country.

Her floor routine, with a score of 23.175, was singled out for the Level 8 Artistry Award due to the gymnast’s expression, technique, dance and musicality.

The athlete, who wore a leotard designed by a local artist, said she was excited to represent the Northern Territory.

“The NT hasn’t always made it to big competitions like nationals and now we’re getting there and reaching higher levels,” she said.

Her favourite part of the competition was showing off her new routines.

The athlete’s coach and NT Head Coach, Jenny Swan, said the teenager really showed her talents out on the floor.

“On the floor, each gymnast’s individuality can really shine through,” she said.

Gymnastics NT Executive Director Jayde Martin says the territory’s gymnastics community is proud of Lara and Jenny’s efforts.

“Lara has performed with such heart, and she has had a beautifully positive attitude throughout the competition, gaining her admiration from her fellow competitors,” she said.
