The 2017 Australian Gymnastics Championships is the biggest event of the year for competitive Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) athletes Amelia Pollon, Beatrice Carter and Cassandra Ho along with Tyson West, trialling for Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG).
The Championships will again be held at Hisense Arena in Melbourne and hosted by Gymnastics Australia (GA). The Championships will run from Monday 22 May 2017 – Sunday 4 June 2017
The girls; Amelia, Beatrice and Cassandra will be trying their luck at the level 7 open division. Tyson is trialling for the men’s open level 7.
“In 2016 both Beatrice and Amelia represented the NT in the National level 7 competition, they each demonstrated amazing talent. Both Beatrice and Amelia placed into finals and came in 8th and 9th place overall with Amelia reaching 7th place in Bars and Beatrice placing 5th on beam. Gymnastics is a physically and mentally tough sport and for these athletes to reach this level is an achievement in itself,” said Jayde Martin Executive Director today.
The WAG team heading to the championships will be led by Siobhan Wolsey, speaking today, “the girls are looking fit, strong and confident, we are looking forward to positive results coming out during the week and putting together another great team this year.”
Rhys Barden, MAG team coach is particularly excited to have Tyson trialling and is confident he will do well and get through to compete at the national event.
“All of our competing gymnasts are excited to put the sport and the Northern Territory on the map at the national event.”
The selection trial for the NT State Team is on Sunday March 12 at the Marrara Multi-Purpose Hall from 10am till 12pm.
