Bigham Cup Postponed

After much deliberation, and in consultation with participating States and Territories, Gymnastics Northern Territory (GNT) have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 Bigham Cup.

The health and safety of all event attendees, as well as minimising the travel and financial risk for individuals, has been an important part of assessing the potential reschedule of the 2021 Bigham Cup after the event was postponed earlier this month due to COVID travel restrictions in the Northern Territory (and across Australia). The event venue was only able to supply two dates that could be considered along with many other factors such as varying competitive seasons and prolonging competition training for athletes whilst encroaching on valuable development training time. The NT weather and ‘build up’ timing was also accounted for.

For most states and territories, there has been a window of 24 to 48 hours when borders have closed, and most lockdowns or quarantine requirements and travel restrictions are 1-2 weeks’ time. Given this current state of play and the unpredictability of COVID it has led to the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Bigham event and make 2022 the inaugural year in the NT.

GNT will still be hosting the Northern Territory Gymnastics Championships over the weekend of September 18-19. We have invited the States and Territories to enter the invitational component of our championships as representatives of their State/Territory. Indication of participation has been received from Gymnastics SA, Gymnastics TAS and Gymnastics WA, however participant numbers will be reduced.

For the NT Competitors GNT will refund the entry fees for athletes who are now not able to attend.

Please note NT Champs entries (alterations/withdrawals) will now close Tuesday, September 7 at 12noon, we ask that you please advise before this date of any changes so we are able to reconcile entries.

We apologise whole heartedly for the inconvenience caused thus far and look forward to launching the Bigham Cup in 2022.
